The idea and dream of Uncommon Luxe has been culminating for many years. Being that my 40th birthday was approaching I decided it was time to take the bull by the horns and no longer think about the dream, but actually live the dream. And so the journey begins…
Vietnam was the first of many sourcing trips to come. It began in Saigon, where I met the talented Thanh Huynh of Freewill Leather. Freewill Leather is a collection of handmade leather goods. Thanh studied Industrial Design and pursued a career in Interior Design. After leaving her job, she attended a workshop on leather crafting and found her passion. She opened her business with a few friends, which consists of leather making workshops and the development of Freewill Leather.
During my time in Saigon I explored the vast city, learned about Vietnamese culture and art, ate delicious food, spent time with old and new friends, and created the collaboration with Freewill Leather.
I proceeded to head north and spent time in Hanoi before traveling to the Sa Pa region.
The Sa Pa region consists of various hill tribes known for their traditional crafts. I was based in Ta Van, which is a village of the Black Hmong tribe. They are famous for their beautiful hand dyed and batiked fabric, and embroidery work. I stayed with the lovely family of Indigo Snail Boutique Homestay. It was an absolute highlight of my trip. The people are incredibly warm and welcoming, and the landscape is stunning. The culture and way of life are very different from what I experienced in the other places I traveled to in Vietnam.
My first sourcing trip came to a close with enjoying the beach and historical town of Hoi An, and visiting Thanh Ha Pottery Village.
As one can imagine, there is a mixture of emotions as I walk this path. I feel grateful for the opportunity, and am hopeful this dream will come true. Thank you to everyone in my community for your constant support, I couldn’t have done this without you! All my love…
